How to Evaluate Garment ERP Software for Apparel Manufacturing

A practical guide to evaluating garment ERP software across merchandising, costing, materials, production, quality, shipment and analytics.

Start with the order lifecycle

A garment ERP should connect the lifecycle of an order instead of treating merchandising, stores and production as isolated departments. Evaluate how buyer enquiries, styles, costing, samples, purchase orders, BOMs, material planning, production stages, quality, packing and shipment connect in one operational chain.

Evaluate material control

Material planning is central to apparel execution. Review how the system handles BOM requirements, procurement status, fabric and trims, receipts, issues, returns, consumption and shortages. Teams should be able to understand what is required, what is available and what could delay production.

Look beyond production entry

A useful production system does more than record completed quantities. It should expose plan versus actual, WIP by stage, line or operation visibility where relevant, quality exceptions and shipment readiness. The objective is decision visibility, not additional data entry.

Check role-based ownership

Merchandisers, planners, stores teams, production users, quality teams, finance and management need different views and controls. During evaluation, map which roles create, approve, review and close each operational step.

Plan implementation in phases

ERP success depends on process ownership, master data and user adoption. A phased rollout allows teams to validate critical workflows through UAT, stabilize them, then expand into connected modules and analytics.

Questions to ask vendors

Ask for a workflow demonstration using a realistic order scenario. Confirm integration options, permission models, auditability, migration responsibilities, support process, reporting flexibility and how exceptions are handled—not only the number of available screens.

A practical garment ERP demo checklist

Ask each vendor to demonstrate the same sample buyer order. Include two sizes, two colours, a fabric shortage and a quality rejection so you can assess how the system handles exceptions.

  1. Order and costing: Create the style, size and colour quantities, material requirements and estimated costs. Show how a buyer revision changes the order.
  2. Material planning: Compare required fabric and trims with available stock. Identify shortages and trace the related purchase orders.
  3. Production: Follow quantities through cutting, sewing and finishing. Check how partial completion and work in progress are recorded.
  4. Quality: Record rejected quantities and demonstrate the rework or rejection process without counting them as finished goods.
  5. Packing and shipment: Compare packed quantities with the buyer order by size and colour. Identify what remains before shipment.
  6. Permissions and reporting: Show who can edit or approve changes and how managers trace a dashboard figure back to its records.

For each step, record whether the capability is available as standard, requires configuration, needs customization or is outside the proposed scope. Include agreed requirements in the implementation proposal.
